Tioga Hall of Fame Driver dies of Cancer
Gary George “Jerry” Hayes, inducted last month into the Tioga Racing Hall of
Fame, died of cancer Thursday at his home in Glen Aubry. He was 61.
Hayes, who ended his 15-year driving career in the early 1970’s, was track
champion at Five-Mile Point Speedway and Shangra-La .... now Tioga .... Speedway. In 1990, Hayes was inducted into the Dusty Doyle Memorial Hall of Fame.
Chuck Akulis, one of the top drivers in the area for the past three decades, was just getting started when he competed against Hayes.
“He was a real nice guy, really personable person”, Akulis said, “I can
remember watching him and then racing against him, although I wasn’t much competition for him back then. He always had a real good car.”
Hayes is survived by his wife Sandra Louise ( Hinds ) Hayes and children Michael, and Shelly Hayes of Florida, Renee Hayes and Howard Boyce of Glen Aubry, and Anthony and Bonnie Hayes of Lisle.
Memorial Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Nichols Funeral Home
